A Deeper Look: The Lord’s Prayer

I wanted to share something with you today that has had a profound effect on my prayer life.  In Matthew 6:9-13 Jesus gives us a model for what our prayers should look like:

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

I think it is common of us to scan this prayer, even say it a time here and there, but never really soak in the meaning of what Jesus was getting at.  You see, it was not these exact words that Jesus wanted us to say each day, but rather to pray out the meaning in each verse.  “Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.” This is a verse to convey the majesty of God, the sacredness of everything He is, and in response, the reverence we have to the great name of I AM.  “Your kingdom come” – The continual cry of the saints is expressed in this short verse.  I think this prays for not only the second coming of Christ, but also for the Kingdom of God to be expressed in my life and in yours in each moment of our day.

I challenge you to take a meditative look at this prayer and see just how deep and wide this passage expands in meaning.
